A Note from Our Founder

I started PlayForwardLA because I’ve seen firsthand how powerful sports can be in a young person’s life.

Sports create structure. They build confidence. They teach resilience, discipline, and leadership. But I’ve also seen something else — the growing reality that access to those opportunities is not equal.

In Los Angeles, youth sports have become increasingly competitive, structured, and expensive. What used to be a simple path — joining a team, playing consistently, and improving over time — has evolved into a system that often requires significant financial commitment.

Club fees. Travel. Training. Exposure. For many families, these aren’t just commitments — they’re barriers.

And what’s hardest to ignore is this: there are talented, driven kids who never get the same opportunities — not because of ability, but because of cost.

That’s why I started PlayForwardLA. This organization is built on a simple idea: opportunity in sports should not be determined by financial circumstances.

We’re still at the beginning. We’re listening, learning, and working to understand how we can make the greatest impact. This newsletter is part of that effort — to highlight what’s happening in youth sports, bring attention to real challenges, and build a community around solutions.

Youth Soccer: Opportunity or Pay-to-Play?

Over the past decade, youth soccer in Los Angeles has evolved into a highly competitive, club-driven system. At its best, it offers elite coaching, structured development, and meaningful exposure to college and professional pathways.

But beneath that progress is a growing divide. Participation in competitive club soccer can demand annual fees in the thousands, travel across the state or country, and additional private training just to remain competitive.

  • $2,000–$5,000+ in annual club fees

  • Travel costs for tournaments and showcases

  • Private training layered on top of team commitments

For many families, the pathway exists — but it’s no longer equally accessible.

In a city as diverse as Los Angeles, that has real consequences. Entire communities risk being underrepresented, not because of lack of talent, but because of lack of access.

Basketball: Still Accessible — But Changing Fast

Basketball has long been one of the most accessible sports in the country. In Los Angeles, that tradition still lives in parks, rec leagues, and community gyms across the city.

But at the competitive level, the landscape is changing. The growth of AAU programs, national travel teams, and showcase events has created new opportunities — and new barriers.

  • Elite pathways can open doors for athletes with resources

  • Team fees, travel, camps, and exposure events raise the total cost

  • Community-based play still offers one of the strongest entry points in youth sports

The challenge now is preserving accessibility while expanding opportunity.

Field Notes

Early Specialization

Athletes are focusing on one sport younger than ever, increasing pressure while raising the risk of burnout and injury.

Private Training Boom

Skill development has become an industry. Valuable for many athletes, but another layer of cost for families already stretched.

Exposure Economy

Recruiting visibility is increasingly tied to participation in expensive leagues, showcases, and travel circuits.

The Always-On Athlete

Year-round competition is replacing unstructured play, rest, and multi-sport development.

The Real Cost of Playing Sports in Los Angeles

When families think about youth sports, they often think about sign-up fees. But the true cost is much larger.

$1.5K–$5K+Team or club fees
$1K–$3K+Travel per year
$3K–$10K+Total annual spend

For families with multiple children, these numbers climb quickly. This creates a system where access becomes limited, opportunity becomes unequal, and talent pipelines become narrower — even though the benefits of sports remain undeniable.
